Future-Self Technique: A guided journey to connect with your future self.
This is a deep hypnotic guided meditation based on the psychological concept of future self-continuity.
Future self-continuity is the degree of connectedness a person feels between their present self and future self. A large body of research has shown that future self-continuity has a critical role in influencing our daily decision making, achievements, saving behaviours, exercise and social behaviours (Hershfield H. E., 2009, 2011; Yunzhi LIU et al., 2018). Hershfield et al. (2013) found physical evidence of future self-continuity by studying changes in our brain activity from fMRI scans. As people shifted from describing their current selves to talking about themselves 10 years in the future, there was a significant change in their neural patterns. The neural patterns when they began discussing their future selves were similar to the brain activity when talking about a stranger.
This is why we end up caring more about our desires and needs in the present and less likely to do things that support our future selves' health and happiness. Because why would you bother saving money for some stranger when you could spend it today on someone you know and love? What's amazing is that when people used a simple technique like guided visualisation to "get to know" and building a connection with their future selves, their neural patterns changed and they adopted better habits. Follow up studies showed people who were more connected to their future selves became more motivated to make choices that will benefit themselves in the future. They were more inclined to save for the future, to exercise and to stick to new habits.
Before you press play.
Find somewhere quiet in your home or workplace where you will ideally not be disturbed for the next 15 minutes. Sit down comfortably and keep your neck and back straight. You can lean against a chair back or a wall to help keep your back straight. Most people find that keeping their eyes closed helps them visualise images and details better.
